Eagles and Hawks (Large
diurnal raptors). |
|
|
These
large birds of prey hunt during the day. What differentiates
Hawks from Eagles
(and also Falcons) is their size. From largest to smallest:
Eagles, Hawks, and Falcons. With the smaller birds becoming
more specialized at taking faster, nimble prey. Many of
these birds are either threatened, or recovering from
dwindling numbers due to loss of habitat, pesticides, as
well as other factors. |

Owls are members of the Strigiformes, an order of birds of
prey (like Hawks and Eagles). All owls are characterized by
their large forward-facing eyes, hawk-like beak, flat face
and circle of feathers around the face (called a facial
disc). We have 8 species of
owls in New York State, 7 of which nest here. |
