Decker Creek FallsThursday, June 3 - Contributor Matt Champlin brings us some photos from Decker Creek Falls in Moravia. This is an excellent stop if you are out by Montville Falls (which is actually on the same network of creeks) or Fillmore Glen State Park which is a must-see if you are in the area.

May 2010
Whirlpool State Park - NiagaraTuesday, May 11 - Continuing the effort to provide unmatched information and media on the Niagara Falls region, here is a thorough look at Whirlpool State Park and the Niagara Whirlpool. It has over 50 large format photos in the gallery; an interactive trail map; 3 high fidelity audio clips and a short video, all of which I find very relaxing. I love this park.
March 2010
Devil's Hole State Park - NiagaraTuesday, March 30 - By the end of this year my goal is to have the best Niagara Falls resource on the web. To kick off this year's effort, here is a profile of one of the NY side's little known Niagara-region parks: Devils' Hole State Park.  It is one of my favorite places to explore along the Niagara.

I will be away for a few weeks in April. During this time there will be no updates to the main site, but our community section always has fresh content. I would like to take the time to thank three of our team members at NYFalls.com who have helped me keep this site going with fresh and interesting content. I certainly would not be able to do it myself and I thank them greatly for their time and commitment.

Krull Park / Olcott BeachFriday, March 5 - The Lake Ontario page is updated with a spiffy new map showing all the great parks and access points along the shore. Additionally, I added a fantastic park in Niagara County that not too many people know about. Krull Park (often referred to as Olcott Beach) is a county park in the small lakeside hamlet of Olcott, NY. The history of the park and hamlet, as well as what the community is doing to preserve it, is quite interesting.
January 2010
Old Mill FallsFriday, January 9 - I thought Old Mill Falls, on Flint Creek in Ontario County, would be a quick and easy stop. Situated in the center of the village of Phelps and visible from Main St., I figured the man-made/natural drop would be an easy shoot. But a friendly resident, back from college for the summer, showed me the many other small waterfalls upstream, and I spent the better part of the day exploring the nooks and crannies of Flint Creek in Phelps.
February 2010
Eagles and Hawks of New YorkThursday, Feb 18 - The second page in our guide to birds in New York State covers the larger diurnal raptors: Eagles and Hawks. Spring migration will be here sooner than we know it... it'll be a great time to dust off the binoculars, or better yet, those telephoto lenses, and get a decent glimpse of these amazing birds. Where can you spot them? I've included a map of New York's best hawk-watch locations.
December 2009
Douple Drop FallsSunday, December 13 - Ontario Pathways, Inc. has done a wonderful job of acquiring, developing and maintaining a 19-mile trail that passes by Double Drop Falls near the village of Phelps. This multi-use trail offers an excellent recreational opportunity for the community as well as unparalleled access to these two waterfalls along the way.
November 2009
Mount Hope CemeteryFriday, November 27 - The rolling hills, magnificent trees and melancholy artistry that make up Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester, NY, combine to create an eerily beautiful setting, meant to house Rochester's dead, at the same time creating a treasured park and museum to the living. The narrow roads of the cemetery wind around the shaded hills leading visitors to parcels of unique character and mood, making this an exciting place to explore.
New York Topo Maps - DownloadFriday, November 13 - Highly detailed 7.5 minute topographic maps of the Adirondack region have been added to the maps section. It takes a while to organize this massive set and get the maps indexed and linked in, so I'll be adding more regions in the upcoming months. Despite many of them being outdated as far as urban development, these maps are the best resource for waterfall-hunters.
October 2009
New York Topo Maps - DownloadFriday, October 16 - Our Maps section is growing with the addition of the complete set of 1:250,000 scale Topographic Maps for New York. Additionally a Guide to Topographic Maps (with Symbol Key) has also been posted. It's a great guide to the working and various symbols of USGS topographic maps.
New York Topo Maps - DownloadFriday, October 2 - Over the next few months we will be building a new Map Download section, which will contain various maps and map utilities available for free. To kick off this new section, we have added the complete set of 1:100,000 scale Topographic Maps for New York. We will be adding more maps on a regular basis, so check back often.
September 2009
Robert Treman State ParkFriday, September 18 - After a month-long hiatus we are back with a large update this week. Lead Contributor Matt Champlin (who was recently married ‒ congratulations, Matt!) penned a detailed description of Robert H. Treman State Park in Ithaca. Enfield Glen is packed full of waterfalls of various shapes and sizes, including the colossal Lucifer Falls.
August 2009
Salmon River FallsFriday, August 21 - Lead Contributor Matt Champlin covers Salmon River Falls, east of Oswego. I was surprised to see how massive and breathtaking the falls is even in the low summer flow, when it falls in three parallel ribbons. Matt did an excellent job of verbally and photographically capturing this unique area.
Densmore FallsFriday, August 7 - It's hard to believe that within the highly developed community of Irondequoit, northeast of Rochester, lies a slice of peaceful nature that surrounds Densmore Falls. When within the small glen the nearby housing developments and busy expressways seem to disappear. Unfortunately the poor water quality and abundant trash strewn about bring them back.
Hector FallsFriday, August 14 - Hector Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in the Finger Lakes. With a height of roughly 165 ft it towers over the private cottages below. The easy way to see it: from Rt 414. The best way to see it: get on a boat and see the whole thing from Seneca Lake. Lead Contributor Matt Champlin  put together an excellent guide and some fantastic photos.
July 2009
Skunk InformationFriday, July 24 - Just a quick update this week. Skunks stink. We have put together a collection of photos and interesting facts about these interesting little animals.

Matt has added some photos of Bucktail Falls.

High Falls District RochesterFriday, July 17 - Rochester-area photographers are lucky to have a treasure-trove of subjects in the High Falls District downtown. In the four visits I made this year to photograph the falls,  old mills and factories, I came back with near a thousand shots. Trimming it down to 30 for the revamped page was tough.  I urge you to get out there this summer and see what the place has to offer. But before you go, read up on the history.
Le Roy Falls - Old Buttermilk FallsFriday, July 10 - I didn't know about Le Roy Falls until I saw it on Google Earth. Le Roy is best known as being the birthplace of Jell-O, but like many New York towns, it began as a mill settlement. The waterfall, sometimes referred to as Old Buttermilk Falls, is complemented by a man-made dam just upstream.

Matt Champlin provided some new photos and videos for Buttermilk Falls State Park. Check them out.

Rattlesnake GulfFriday, July 3 - Lead Contributor Matt Champlin, working with Adams Eden Camp, collected detailed information as well as stunning photos of a private glen south of Syracuse in the Tully Valley. For a nominal fee you too can visit  Rattlesnake Gulf to hike the creek to the "Blue Hole" and take advantage of the numerous amenities this beautiful private camp has to offer.

With help from our Editor: Kelly Lucero, the New York State Reptiles & Amphibians guide has been updated with additional species, facts, pictures, and audio files (great for identifying frogs). It is now the definitive online herp guide for Upstate New York.

June 2009
Fort NiagaraFriday, June 26 - Our guide to Fort Niagara State Park and Old Fort Niagara Historic Site has been added to the Niagara Falls guide. The name of the park is quite a mouthful. It's actually two facilities: the State Park (the recreational area) and the Historical Site (a living museum of colonial and frontier fortifications).
Adirondack waterfall guideFriday, June 19 - Russell Dunn has penned five waterfall guides, covering much of Eastern New York With his latest book expands into the Berkshire Region of Western Massachusetts. His Trails with Tales series of books extend beyond traditional hiking guides with rich historical narrative, connecting readers not only to nature, but the fascinating stories tied to its past. I talked with Russell about his books, his love for waterfalls, and what new projects he is working on. Read the interview here.

Lead Contributor Matt Champlin updated the Great Gully page with some great new photos.

Oriskany FallsFriday, June 12 - Guest contributor Jim Weeks
snapped some beautiful shots of his hometown cataract: Oriskany Falls, a 20 foot cascade with an interesting V-shaped crest.

Wilson Tuscarora State ParkSaturday, June 06 - Wilson-Tuscarora State Park is a great spot for swimming, fishing, picnicking and enjoying Lake Ontario. The beach rarely closes in the summer due to pollution, like so many other Ontario beaches do, making it a realizable place to cool off in the hot summer.
Lead contributor Matt Champlin added more  Frontenac Falls photos to the collection.
May 2009
Akron Falls County ParkFriday, May 15 - Akron Falls dries up very quickly, so I went out there in March and then a few days ago (after a brief period of rain) to snap some shots. I ended up spending more time than I planned, partly because of the climbing needed to reach Upper Falls (carrying all my equipment), but also because I didn't expect to have so much fun photographing all the interesting features of Murder Creek as well as the stone masonry used throughout the park. The profile we have is filled with history, mythology, facts, photos, audio, video and more. Check it out.
Onondaga Lake ParkFriday, May 1 - Onondaga Lake is considered by many to be "one of the most polluted lakes in America." While visitors enjoy the beautiful views from Onondaga Lake Park, a multi-million dollar clean-up effort is underway. How did this happen and what is being done to fix it? We take a look at the tragic history and optimistic future of Onondaga Lake in our latest Lake profile.
April 2009
Barker Bicentennial ParkFriday, April 17 - New York's Seaway Trail strings together numerous parks along Lake Ontario's southern shore. Barker Bicentennial Park is one of the small ones. It is a very tranquil picnic park with a nice view of the lake. Not much else.
Free Waterfall ScreensaverFriday, April 10 - A new and improved version of our Upstate NY Waterfall Screensaver is available for download. Featuring over 40 beautiful NY waterfall scenes in a simple slideshow presentation, it is easy to install and 100% free. It has no spyware. There is no catch. It's our gift to you.
Owl Species of New YorkFriday, April 3 - Owl Woods at Braddock Bay State Wildlife Management Area is popular this time of year when hundreds of spotters visit looking to find a Great-horned, Saw-whet or other species of owl. Many who walk the trails with their necks craned upwards barely know what they should be looking for. We put together a guide to the owls we have in New York to help people find and identify these incredible and elusive birds of prey. You can also discuss and show off what you find on our message board.
March 2009
Three Falls WoodsFriday, March 26 - We are kicking off waterfalling season with a profile on Three Falls Woods in Manlius. This private expanse is home to three convergent waterfalls and 175 acres of peaceful woodland that has gone undeveloped for decades. Now in danger of being converted into track housing, a campaign is being run by the Manlius Greenspace Coalition to help preserve this natural treasure for generations to come. Lead contributor Matt Champlin visited Three Falls Woods this month to collect information and photos.
Niagara FallsFriday, March 20 - The Niagara Falls section has been updated with yet another set of FAQ responses; this time pertaining to power generation at the falls.

An event calendar for the Niagara region has also been added.

Matt Champlin took advantage of the warm weather and subsequent thaw to snap a few more photos of Guppy Falls.

Niagara FallsFriday, March 13 - A new set of questions (mostly having to do with the Niagara River) have been answered for our Niagara Falls FAQ. If you have any questions about Niagara Falls, send them in and we'll do our best to answer them.
Niagara FallsFriday, March 6 - Our list of Niagara Falls Attractions has doubled. There is not much more that can be added to it without dabbling into the overtly boring stuff. It's a great list to review before visiting either side of the border.
February 2009
PorcupineFriday, Feb. 27 - The porcupine is a slow, timid animal with some (literally) sharp hair. Although there are several species in the US, we only have one around here: the North American Porcupine. Read about it here.
Niagara FallsFriday, Feb. 20 - A new set of questions (mostly having to do with the Niagara River) have been answered for our Niagara Falls FAQ. If you have any questions about Niagara Falls, send them in and we'll do our best to answer them.
Fish: Longnose GarFriday, Feb. 13 - The latest fish to be profiled in our New York State Wildlife Guide is the Gar; a prehistoric-looking predator that can be found stalking prey in the shallows of our major lakes and river systems.
Niagara FallsFriday, Feb. 6 - We have just a quick update this week with some new questions answered for our Niagara Falls FAQ. If you have any questions about Niagara Falls, send them in and we'll do our best to answer them.
January 2009

RaccoonsFriday, Jan. 30 - There is only one type of Raccoon in New York State, but it is found practically everywhere. There's probably one outside your window right now; watching you.

Serenity FallsMonday, Jan. 27 - Serenity Falls is Buffalo's only natural waterfall and it's not much of one. Located within Forest Lawn Cemetery in downtown Buffalo along a polluted run of Scajaquada Creek, it is certainly nothing you would want to plan a day trip for. The historic Forest Lawn Cemetery, on the other hand, may make it worth a visit. Designed to be both a peaceful resting place for the dead and a beautiful outdoor museum for the community, it caters well to those interested in Buffalo's modern history or those practicing photography.
Pike, Pickerel, MuskellungeFriday, Jan. 16 - Our wildlife guide has been updated with a section on the Pike family, which includes various forms of Pike, Pickerel and Muskellunge.
Webster ParkFriday, Jan. 9 - Often referred to as "the smelly beach,"  Webster Park's lakefront has a lot of potential; currently spoiled by water quality issues and lack of proper maintenance. Just across the street, the wooded portion of the park is a popular camping and picnicking destination for Rochester-area residents. The hilly terrain makes it a favorite sledding-grounds, at least for those on the east side of the city. I still favor Black Creek Park's massive slopes this time of year.
December 2008
Glen Falls, WilliamsvilleFriday, Dec. 19 - Late in the summer I was able to head to the western counties to photograph some waterfalls around Buffalo. Glen Falls in Williamsville is a classic urban waterfall with an extensive history of development and is now surrounded by a beautiful community park. Glen Park is easily one of the most beautifully landscaped in the state, making visiting these falls a pleasure any time of year.  The village of Williamsville also has a variety of pastry and ice cream shops near the park- making a summer visit all the more enjoyable.
MudminnowsFriday, Dec. 12 - A section about Mudminnows has been added to our Upstate New York Wildlife ID Guide.

Photo by Jim WeeksFriday, Dec. 5 - Jim Weeks, known to our Community as Backpacker, talks about his recent feat: joining the exclusive club of people who have managed to conquer the 46 high peaks  of the Adirondacks. This interview will give you some great insight into his remarkable accomplishment; with accompanying photos and maps.

November 2008 Photo Challenge WinnerKelly Lucero wins our November Photo Challenge with this excellent photo taken in Fairport. Our December Photo Challenge is now open. The subject: Lights. Submit the best photo taken in upstate NY and win.

November 2008
The American EelFriday, Nov 28 - Our guide to New York State Fish continues to grow; with a section on Eels. The eel's life-cycle is almost the reverse of Salmon. Eels spawn out at sea and then migrate up freshwater rivers and lakes, where they live out the majority of their lives. Some live for over 50 years and reach lengths close to 5 feet.
Clarendon FallsFriday, Nov 21 - Clarendon Falls has been my "white whale" for the past two years. Every time I'd make the 40 minute trek from Rochester,  I'd find a near-dry falls; nothing worth photographing. I made 6 trips in total, and it wasn't until this past October that I snapped something worth presenting. The water flow is a bit low, but the fall foliage makes up for it. This profile is the second to have high-quality audio. There is also Desktop Wallpaper available.
Owasco LakeFriday, Nov 7 - Owasco Lake completes our coverage of the Finger Lakes. When I started covering the Finger Lakes, I knew little about them. Two years later, I feel I still know little- there is so much more out there to explore. I encourage you to get out and enjoy this region, and hopefully our guides can help you get started.

Our Monthly Photo Challenge covers Tombstones. It's easy to get out and find a cemetery and start taking pictures, so give it a try this month. Who knows, you may just snap the winning photo.

October 2008
HerringFriday, Oct 31 - Happy Halloween! Just a quick update today. The wildlife guide now has a page about freshwater herring.

The Capture Rochester book is out! Did you order your copy?

Warsaw FallsFriday, Oct 24 - The property status of Warsaw Falls is questionable. Multiple sources say it is accessible; let's hope this wonderful site stays that way. I've been holding on to these photos for about a year, and although when I last visited the water flow was minimal, the gorge was an excellent hike and I came away with excellent photos.  There's also some Desktop Wallpaper available.
WhitefishMon, Oct 20 - Our inland fish species ID guide now has a section on Whitefish, which are actually in the Salmonid family. We will be adding new fish families on a regular basis this winter.

I found Kelly Lucero through Capture Rochester where she was consistently uploading fantastic photos. She is now our new editor in charge of cleaning up my grammar and spelling. She's also very active in our community section. A very gifted "still life" photographer; I'm hoping we will be learning a lot from her in the upcoming months. Check out her excellent gallery.

Seneca LakeFri, Oct 10 - Check out all there is to do around Seneca Lake. The photo opportunities at the numerous parks alone was enough to keep me busy for the summer. After 4 visits this year, I came back with full memory cards and a craving to go back for more. It was a tough job narrowing all of those photos down to the 40 or so for the online gallery.

The numerous wineries (with several new ones springing up each year) not only present you with a reason to visit, but their varied architecture and upstate charm make them great subjects for the lens. Use this page as a guide and get out there before the color leaves the trees.

Niagara FallsMon, Oct 6 - We have just a quick update this week with some new questions answered for our Niagara Falls FAQ. Next week we have a much larger update in store.

Be sure to get out and capture anything related to football for our monthly challenge.

September 2008
Norton's FallsThursday, Sept 25 - The great thing about publishing my work to a website, rather than a book, is that I get to revisit sites and update our profiles with new photos, video and more. We have our first audio sample and new media content for Norton's Falls in Rochester. I'll admit, the recording of the large drop  sounds a bit like white noise, but I do find it relaxing. Try it with a  pair of quality headphones for the best quality. I will be adding plenty more audio samples in the future.
I've been neglecting the Desktop Wallpaper collection and added one for Norton's Falls. This winter I will add several for the Finger Lakes.
30 Mile Point LighthouseTues, Sept 9 - If you are looking for subjects to photograph now that Capture Rochester has ended,  give Golden Hill State Park a try. The beautifully restored Thirty-Mile Point Lighthouse makes a great subject and the surrounding park has enough to keep you busy for at least a day. Located on the Seaway Trail, about 50 miles west of Rochester, Golden Hill is the latest in a series Lake Ontario destinations we have covered here.

We have a new Photo Challenge for September: Wineries. Snap the best photo of something to do with wineries in upstate New York, and win.

August 2008
Salmon and TroutTues, Aug 26 - Our wildlife section has been expanded with a new category summarizing inland fish species of Upstate NY and a guide to Salmon and Trout. Check back often as more fish families are covered.
Chris CecereMon, Aug 18 - Our second photographer to be approved for our Photographers for Hire listing is Chili's Chris Cecere who specializes in Sports Photography. If you need someone to capture the action and excitement of your team or league games, he's the one to go to.
Braddock Bay ParkTues., Aug 12 - 2500 acres of wetland, wooded and developed park land surrounding Braddock Bay, Cranberry, Long, and Buck Ponds, is the perfect stopover for migrating birds tired from crossing Lake Ontario. The numerous species that feed and nest here make this park a Mecca for New York State bird watchers.
Shana ConheadyMon., Aug 4 - We finally have a profile page for team member Shana Conheady. Not only does she have her camera ready on excursions to photograph any cute animals we may pass by, she is also crucial to planning the larger expeditions for me. Her specialty: music education.

Josh JonesI know how tough it is to find a professional photographer for your wedding or other event. We are going to help make it easier for you. NYFalls.com is now qualifying local photographers and giving you their information in an organized and easy-to-compare fashion. If they are in the list, then you can expect professional service and quality. You can ask questions and leave feedback to help others. Our first approved photographer, is Spencerport's Josh Jones, who specializes in wedding photography.

We have a new Photo Challenge for August. Show us your best Zoo Pics from Upstate NY Zoos.

July 2008
Guppy FallsMon., July 28 - Matt Champlin found Guppy Falls, a twenty-footer within the relatively new Skaneateles Conservation Area. There's not much information out there about this one- so I thank him for the scoop and the beautiful photos!
There are about 30 days left to vote for NYFalls.com Community photos on Capture Rochester. Please support us by signing up and voting!
Enchanted HollowWed., July 23 - The falls at Enchanted Hollow, in Morgan Hill State Forest, isn't spectacular by any means, but the location does live up to its name.
This beautiful section of forest is isolated form nearby civilization by a network of small streams. Wildlife abounds at every turn, with a seemingly unlimited variety of insects, birds and mushrooms.
Aunt Sarah's FallsTues., July 15 Aunt Sarah's Falls, supposedly named for the Seneca wife of a pioneer that jumped down it to her death, is one of those roadside falls found on the cliff sides at the southern end of the Finger Lakes. This one is worth a quick stop if you are cruising down Rt 14 at Seneca Lake near Montour Falls.
July's Photo Challenge: Fireworks.
June 2008
Fri., June 27 - The issue of trespassing has been a topic of controversy in our message board since the beginning of this  site. Those that like to get out and explore, often run into situations where the ownership of the land they approach is questionable. After a bit of research, I put together some facts and guidelines to get you up to speed on trespassing and waterway navigation law in New York State.
Palmyra-Macedon Aqueduct ParkFri., June 13 - I wasn't too fond of man-made falls, until I got a chance to spend a day at Palmyra-Macedon Canal Park and see first-hand the beautiful stonework that surrounds this small canal drainage outlet. As the nearby Lock 29, is used this fall either swells or stops, within a matter of minutes. It's quite an interesting site. Getting a good angle for photos was challenging. Although you can observe the falls from several angles, the crumbling aqueduct stonework obscures most views. I did manage to capture several interesting photos that should give you a good idea of what the falls looks like.
May 2008
ShrewsSat., May 31 - We have an identification guide for Shrews of NY. It turns out that photos of shrews are difficult to come by, because these little things are so elusive. So I still have some gaps to fill in the photo library. If you have some shots of shrews you can share, please let me know.
SheQuaGa FallsWed., May 21 SheQuaGa Falls, often referred to as Montour Falls (which is actually the name of the village it's in), can be a startling sight if you aren't expecting it. Anyone driving down Genesee St. in the village can't resist slowing down or pulling over when they catch a glimpse of this massive, 156 ft drop from a sheer cliff.

We have a new Photo Challenge this month. Enter any photo you have taken of any Flowers and if we like it, you may win a prize. You can enter as many photos as you'd like. The only rules: 1: it has to be taken by you. 2: it has to be taken in Upstate NY. Give it a shot. Any photo can win.

Keuka LakeMon., May 12 - Driving around Keuka Lake makes for a great day. There is plenty to do and to see. The area has a rich history with landmarks and museums in every corner. The wine industry has always thrived here. Even during prohibition, when it adapted and sold bottled grape juice- with complimentary fermenting instructions of course.
April 2008
FishMon., April 28 - The Niagara Falls FAQ has been updated with some FAQs about Fish.

If you have any questions about Niagara Falls or the surrounding region that we haven't addressed here, please let us know. We'll try our best to find an answer for you.

Chittenango FallsTue., April 14 Our Chittenango Falls page has been updated with more information and photos. I was out there this past October and was able to get some shots with fall color. Things were going well until a massive thunderstorm rushed in and soaked us before we could get to shelter. I ended up drying myself and my camera gear in the restroom hand-dryer. This was actually the second time we got caught in the rain while down in the gorge. I'm not sure if its the character of the region or just our luck.
Tue., April 2 - This is no April Fools: we have added over 100 new waterfall locations to our list of Upstate NY Waterfalls. That should give us all plenty to do this year.

April's Photo Challenge is now open. Any snapshot of a Funny Face can win it. What's the prize? Something that's sure to induce more funny faces.

March 2008
Fri., March 28 - Regular updates continue as the weather gets Twin Fallswarmer... and I start getting ready to get out and shoot the countless waterfalls and lakes we are still  missing here. I still have several locations from last year to write about too. Last summer I visited Twin Falls in Montour Falls, just minutes away from Watkins Glen. A nice, quick stop if you are in the vicinity.

Our community member redreamer will be exhibiting her unique brand of art at Moravia's Coffee 'N Cream  on May 5th at 6:30pm.
I am quite intrigued by her 'Paintings within Paintings.'

Wed., March 5 - What's a NY state waterfall website without a page Niagara Fallson Niagara Falls? It took me a while because I wanted to put together a thorough section ‒covering all the best things to do and places to stay. I also found that knowing a bit about the history of the Falls and its surrounding makes the experience there much more enjoyable. And of course there are photos, ‒hundreds of them. In hopes of making NYFalls.com the best source for Niagara Falls information, we'll constantly be adding to it. So check back often.
February 2008
Thu., Feb. 7 Corbett's Glen is in trouble and we need your help.
A proposed 6-story parking lot, adjacent to the Glen, could threaten one of Rochester's favorite natural areas. Start by signing this petition.
Then take a few seconds to send the Penfield planning board an E-mail - it doesn't have to be a long one- just a quick note asking them not to allow development so close to the Glen. If you love Corbett's Glen as much as I do, show up at the Planning Board Meeting in Penfield on Feb 14 and state your case. If we let them get away with this, there soon could be more developments encroaching on the Glen. Take action now!

January 2008
Fri., Jan. 18 Matt Champlin has been serving as our Lead Contributor for just about a year now. I've seen Matt's camera. It looks like it has been through a war. He doesn't have the best equipment, or pro lenses, but from the look of his amazing photos, it seems as though he does. This is talent. I'm thankful for all the hard work he has put into the site since joining us and I can't wait to see what he comes up with this year.

Peppermill GulfLast August Matt explored Peppermill Gulf, near South Onondaga. I've heard before that this was a beautiful 90' waterfall, found at the end of an ugly, grimy creek walk. Matt confirmed this story to be mostly true. His photos show a unique waterfall, of various categorization. The water, however, is clean and the trash that lines the creek is old junk from years past. Is Peppermill Falls worth the 2-mile creek walk? I think so.

Mon., Jan. 7 - I'd like to welcome two new team members, both writers, to our community. PJ Har will be heading up a new section of our community devoted to Covered Bridges and other photographic subjects. Mark J. will be a contributing writer, and as an "out-of-stater," will be keeping us up to date on waterfalls outside of NY. I'm looking forward to seeing more of their work.

mouseTotally unrelated to our new team members, today's update is a wildlife identification guide for Mice and Rats. Some are cute, others disgusting. Most are harmless, but a choice few are deadly to humans.  Did I pique your interest? Learn about them before "killed by a mouse" ends up on your tombstone.

The new year brings a few deals on NYFalls.com prints. Starting today you will find 5x7 prints  for only $1.99 each.  Adding to that, use the coupon code: newyears08 for 20% off all other size prints. The deal won't last long, so order soon. Every sale goes towards paying the bill here, so your purchase is appreciated. (minimum $10 order required for using coupons).

December 2007
Fri., Dec. 21 Frontenac Falls can be considered Taughannock's little brother as it cuts through the same rock. Frontenac FallsJust north of the state park and nestled within private Boy Scout camp, Frontenac is certainly doesn't get the traffic the falls at the state park get. Our own Matt Champlin received permission from Camp Barton to photograph the falls. He found a setting similar to Taughannock - gigantic canyon walls with forested tops, towering high over the waterfall.  Surprisingly this falls isn't a straight plunge of water like Taughannock, but a chaotic, A-shaped cascade. We have found that there is a waterfall of similar size just upstream on another plot of private land.

Our message board has been upgraded. We now have a section to dedicated to Fishing. Stop and and tell us about your favorite spot or show us your catch. The new message board has plenty of new features including picture and file attachments, message tracking, and embedded videos. Stop in and introduce yourself.

Fri., Dec. 7 - I've heard Medina Falls  referred to as "ugly" before. Medina FallsWhen I first checked it out for myself in July, I saw it from above on the Erie Canal towpath and although it certainly wasn't the prettiest, I didn't think it was "ugly." At least I figured I could capture a beautiful photo of it... that is until I climbed down in the disgusting creek bed below. Everything was coated in smelly gray sludge, with trash thrown all about. Standing down there for just a few minutes and I was already craving a shower. I wonder who would tolerate hanging around down there long enough to empty all the beer cans that I saw lying about?

Have any photos of Christmas trees you want to share? Submit them to our December Photo Challenge and you just may win.

November 2007
Fri., Nov. 30 Brenda Neville is our wildlife expert here. She is a knowledgeable and active member of our forum and owns some  cabins next to the national forest.

Today though the month of December, 8x10 prints are on sale for only $10.99. In addition, you can still use the coupon: GRANDOPENING to get 15% off all other sizes. If you want to receive the prints by Christmas you should order by the 17th.

Thurs., Nov. 22 - Over the years I have found that a boring summer day in Rochester is easily cured by heading up to "Charlotte Beach" for a bite to eat, some ice cream and a walk on the pier. What is officially named Ontario Beach Park was recently reconditioned in preparation for the (now failed) "Fast Ferry" to Toronto. The ferry is long gone, but the restaurants, bars and shop that followed it in remain for the most part.

Abbott'sAbbott's  Frozen Custard will be your walking companion here. This classic ice-cream shop, which has been dishing out scoops here for decades, is possibly even more popular than the neighboring beach. And if your up for some fattening, yet delicious grilled-to-order burgers and fries, there's plenty of that available in the neighboring food joints.

The history of the park is of particular interest to me, being a fan of amusement parks, I at first found it hard to believe this strip of land covered in grass and sand was once a booming amusement park, complete with thrill rides and sideshows.

There's only a few more days left to get you entries in for the November Photo Challenge: Scenes from a Road.

Sun., Nov. 18 Finally I started selling prints of my photos. You can check out what's currently available in the online gallery. If you don't see what you like, check back again as I will be adding to it often. For the rest of the month you can save 15% off of your order (excluding shipping) by using this coupon code at checkout: GRANDOPENING
Proceeds of all print sales will go to help NYFalls.com grow.

Often I'm asked which photos are may favorites, or which ones do I recommend. That's a tough question for me as my taste is kind of odd. I would say the following are my favorites at the time being, mostly do to personal reasons. These will probably change over the year. The reasons?... too much to say in such a little space.

Thurs., Nov. 1 -  Yet another section of our wildlife guide has been completed. I found Moles to be interesting creatures. A few weeks back I was hiking the birdsong trail Mendon Ponds and saw one sniffing around a rock. He was oblivious to me observing him. So I tried to get in closer for a photo and my sneaky movements must have felt like thunder to him. Before the shutter could snap, he disappeared back into his burrow. That would explain the difficulty I had finding decent photos for this guide.

Matt Champlin was out during peak foliage the last several weeks. He brought us some beautiful fall shots of New Hope Mills and Carpenter Falls. Check them out- they are outstanding.

Our October Photo Challenge is now closed and we have a new topic to concentrate on this month. The challenge is to post some creative Roadside scenes. Remember to bring your camera on your next drive.

October 2007
Thurs., Oct. 18 -  Years ago, I read that Holley Falls was a man-made falls. So since I started shooting for this site I avoided it -thinking it was just another concrete drop like all the rest. I was out there in August and was surprised at what I saw. A beautiful, natural-looking cascade cutting through bright red Medina sandstone. I returned multiple times and came to realize it's a wonderful falls to shoot -one of the most photogenic in the area.
Mon., Oct. 10 -  Our message board was offline due to a DDOS Attack. Thanks to HostGator, we seem to be okay now. Make sure you update your anti-virus software so you don't ever end up becoming an unwilling accomplice to an attack like this.
Friday., Oct. 4 -  Just a quick update this week with a page about upstate NY Rabbits. This month's Photo Challenge has been launched. The theme is "Orange." Which should be pretty easy, given the season. So if you see anything orange, snap a shot and post it. Who knows, it may take home this month's trophy.

Community member cbobcat49 took the trophy for last month with this excellent shot of the high peaks region of the Adirondacks.

September 2007
Friday., Sept 28 -  If you spot a large rodent swimming and feeding in a pond, what do you first think? Beaver? Possibly. There are actually three possibilities in in our state. Use this guide to Beaver-like mammals to narrow it down.
Our Message Board has been picking up lately. There are a lot of interesting discussions and spectacular photos being posted. I know there are a lot of you that check it out from time to time and I'd like to invite you to join in and post some stories or photos of your own.
Mon., Sept 24 -  It has gotten to the point where I get so involved in trying to thoroughly capture a waterfall or location, that I don't even get to stop and enjoy the very falls that inspire me to work on this site. Matt Champlin and I were able to get out to Havana Glen this summer, and for the first time, collaborate  on a gallery that I am very proud of. When I poured over the dozens of photos, trying to build an impressive gallery for the site, I realized that even though I didn't frolic in the water or jump in from the cliff while there, I did highly enjoy the viewing the falls, even if it was through the lens.
Fri., Sept 14 -  There are two types of people in this world. Those that classify people into two types, and those that don't. I do. And I believe you either love or hate squirrels. They are no doubt some of the most interesting mammals in our area. They stand upright (like us), fill their homes and their mouths with food for snacking (like us), and some can even fly, which I find fascinating. They also chew on everything- our trash cans, roofs, siding and more. Bird lovers constantly struggle to keep them away from the feeders, and drivers spatter millions across our roads. At least now you can identify the one stuck to your tire.
Fri., Sept 7 -  This week we have a lesser known gully profiled for you. Tully Valley is lined with a very unstable mix of glacial silt, causing the occasional small mudboil or massive landslide, like the one that hit the area in 1993. Onondaga Creek forms Fellows Falls (and a few other drops) as is enters the valley. Luckily it hasn't collapsed onto itself yet. Thanks to Matt Champlin for getting out there for us.
If you haven't already, sign up for our message board and be a part of our community.
August 2007
Friday., Aug 31 Matt visited Buttermilk Falls State Park earlier this month and despite the lack of rain this summer, was able to capture enough photos to get a profile together as well as some wallpaper.
The dry weather this year is hurting our photos in addition to our lawns. Not only does the rain boost the power and fullness of the falls we visit, but the cloudy, overcast skies that accompany it give the perfect light for getting superb photographs. So while you're hoping for good weather the rest of the summer, we're doing the rain dance.
Thurs., Aug 23 -  It always makes for a better hiking experience when you brush up on the history of the area beforehand. Matt was able to get out to Great Gully this month and was inspired to do some research on the region's past. When you enjoy this natural setting, know that you are not the first. Imagine past civilizations, far back enough to be forgotten, and the noble Cayuga calling this land home long ago. Then learn about the crime against humanity that has tainted the land forever.
Wed., Aug 22 -  The galleries for Chittenango Falls and Skaneateles Lake have been updated with some shots from Matt Champlin.
Thu., Aug 16 -  There's a lot of interest lately in River Otters, probably due to their possible resurgence in western NY as well as the popularity and success of their cousins, the Monterey Sea Otters on the west coast. Otters are members of the weasel family, who have all been under a lot of pressure from trapping since we took over these parts. It's a rarity to catch glimpse of any lately. So here's a guide for the Weasel-Like Mammals found in our area. If you spot one, be sure to let us know in our message board.
Sun., Aug 12 - Lakeside Beach State Park was a disappointment. The property was in rough shape when we visited in July. Picnic tables were toppled and thrown into the beach and one lone family chose to spend their day there. I hear the trails are big draw in winter, but with no swimming in the hot months, there's just no pull for visitors. I guess that's good though for those that like it quiet.
Some more books about local people and places were added to our bookstore.
Sun., Aug 5 - I used to go to Hamlin Beach all the time when I was a kid. Even before my time this was one of upstate's great lake-side beach attractions along with Ontario Beach and Seabreeze. Today the place is still buzzing. We went on a mildly warm day and the beach was crowded with people.  Lately they have been having problems with water quality and had to close the beach a few times, a rarity for this park. Could this signify the beginning of the the end of public swimming at Hamlin?
July 2007
Sun., July 29 - I consider the release of the Simpsons Movie a holiday, so I was highly distracted putting the finishing touches on the Wolcott Falls page. It's probably the only waterfall we will ever see in Wayne County, but it's a very beautiful one. Instead of the tiny videos I usually put up, I switched to a new larger, higher quality format. Enjoy eating my bandwidth. There's also a new wallpaper for the Wolcott Falls in the downloads section.
I also added a bunch of new books and DVDs to the Bookstore. Purchases through the bookstore are handled by Amazon.com and a small portion goes to support this site.
Tues., July 17 - Everyone but the fishermen ignore Honeoye Lake, the second smallest of the Finger Lakes. I found it very calm and peaceful, but was disappointed in the lack of access on the southern end, which is a State Wildlife Management Area. There are a surprising amount of deep gullies surrounding the lake, which are almost all on private property. Briggs Gully is within the Wesley Hill Nature Preserve on the southern end. I'm looking forward to exploring it later this summer. The Canandaigua Lake page has been updated, as well as the state Waterfall list.
Mon., July 16 - We've moved to a new & faster host. Join us in the message board.
Mon., July 9 - There is some confusion for those that spot NY's Dog and Cat-like mammals while driving or peeking out their window. I'm hoping this new page will help them properly identify the correct species. I included the Eastern Cougar and Timber Wolf, both species long extirpated from NY, not only to help distinguish them from similar-looking species, but also to learn more about them and discover why it is disappointing to no longer have them living in NY.
Mon., July 2 - Matt's lucky. While I'm stuck inside writing about Canandaigua Lake, he's out exploring Montville Falls in Moravia. This waterfall has all these twists and tumbles and it looks so different from other Finger Lakes waterfalls. I can't wait to get out there myself.
June 2007
Wed., June 27 - I must have driven 300 miles and spent 30 hours putting together the Canandaigua Lake page. There's so much going on in that area, I'm sure I forgot something. But I think it's still the best page on the web about the lake and its surroundings. For the next update we'll get back to waterfalls, with Montville Falls.
Wed., June 20 - Tim and I were able to put together an interactive Waterfall Location Map. This is a huge update that took weeks to implement, primarily because I don't know how to program. Hopefully in the future we will add lots of cool features that will help us plan outings better. If you notice anything in the map that needs changing, let us know about it
Mon., June 18 - There's no shortage of people fishing, boating or swimming on Conesus Lake, the western-most and arguably the most recreational of the Finger Lakes.
Fri., June 15 - We have 3 Large Mammals in Upstate NY. By "large," I mean ones that can crush you in some way.
Wed., June 13 - Learn about our only Marsupial.
Tues., June 12 - More photos added to the Fillmore Glen and Hemlock Lake galleries.
Mon., June 11 - Canadice Lake has been added to the Lakes section.
Tues., June 5 - A few minor updates today. Some details in the Stony Brook State Park profile have been updated. The image galleries for Skaneateles and Cayuga Lakes have a few new shots.
Mon., June 3 - Bats kick off the Mammals pages of the Wildlife section. New photos by Matt have been added to the Carpenter Falls profile.
May 2007
Thurs., May. 24 - Before you head out for the holiday and take photos, read over this new article on how to Take Sharper Pictures.
Mon., May 21 - The Reptiles & Amphibians section is complete with the addition of the Salamanders and Newts page.
Fri., May 18 - A dozen waterfalls added to the waterfall list. Mostly Adirondack region falls.
Tues., May 15 - Matt got out to New Hope Mills to check out the two man-made falls in the area. The site has some interesting history, but even more so is that New Hope Mills is still in business making gourmet pancake mixes. The place makes for some great photos.
Mon., May 7 - A Few of Matt's shots added to Cayuga Lake.
Sun., May 6 - Back to waterfalls with the Cascadilla Gorge profile. Join us in the Community forum and visit our new Wildlife Discussion section.
April 2007
Sat., April. 28 - Another update to the Wildlife section. Identify the Frog or Toad that's keeping you up at night or or the one that you just squished with your car. More items added to the store.
Sun., April. 22 - Another update to the Wildlife section. Check out what species of Turtles we have here in Upstate NY. The Watkins Glen page has been updated.
Fri., April. 20 - A huge update today with the first pages of the Wildlife section. This massive section will serve as guide to wildlife in upstate NY. Take a look at the Reptiles & Amphibians section, which is currently in development. At this point only Snakes and Lizards are done, but expect Turtles next week.
Mon., April. 9 - The High Falls  page has been update to include information on Sam Patch.
Sun., April. 8 - In hopes of seeing some leaves on the trees sooner than later, a new Photoshop tutorial has been added to the articles section. Learn how to  Fix Foliage. New shots have been added to the Skaneateles Lake gallery.
Tues., April. 3 - Videos added to the Lower Clark Gully page.
Sun., April. 1 - Cayuga Lake has been added to the Lakes section.  Join us in the message board.
March 2007
Wed., Mar. 28 - Updates made to the Rochester's High Falls  and Ithaca Falls pages.
Tues., Mar. 27 - Updates have been made to the Chittenango Falls, Grimes Glen and Corbett's Glen pages. Mostly descriptions were added.
Sun., Mar. 25 - Check out Matt Champlin's photos of Fillmore Glen, as well as his staff profile. He quit his corporate job to tour and photograph the county, reaching as far as Alaska. Now he's lead contributor for NYFalls.com.
Sun., Mar. 17 - I redesigned the  home page (as you can see)  to decrease load time and spotlight popular features of the site. The New NYFalls Bookstore is now open. Through a partnership with Amazon, we are able to offer you a selection of local nature and waterfall books and DVDs at excellent prices. Most items have free shipping if you spend $25 or more. All revenue goes towards improving NYFalls. Check it out.
Thu., Mar. 15 - Get familiar with the folks behind NYFalls.com. Check out the About page and upcoming staff galleries, like today's update: Matthew Conheady.
Sat., Mar. 10 - Reynolds Gully is located on the East side of Hemlock Lake. Most of the gully is on private property, but you can visit the portion that the City of Rochester owns. Trespassing is a big concern for property owners, so please do not go beyond posted signs.
Sun., Mar. 04 - The Downloads section has been totally redone. Featuring new and better quality desktop wallpaper and a new version of the free screen saver with 5 more photos added.
New winter shots have been added to the Skaneateles Lake gallery.
February 2007
Tue., Feb. 27 - The Carpenter Falls page is up. One of the most beautiful natural hidden treasures in NY, now protected thanks to the Finger Lakes Land Trust.
Sun., Feb. 18 - Otisco Lake with photos from contributor Matt Champlin has been added to the Lakes section.
Sun., Feb. 11 - Fix those overexposed skies on your photos with this new Photoshop technique added to the Articles section.
Sun., Feb. 4 - Paper Mill Falls is nestled within a small community park in the town of Avon. There are many waterfalls in the area, but this one is the only one publicly accessible.
January 2007
Sun., Jan. 28 - New contributor and Finger Lakes photographer Matt Champlin offers up some excellent shots of Skaneateles Lake for the new lake profile in the lakes section.
Sun., Jan. 21 - Another Photoshop Tutorial: High Pass Sharpening has been added to the Articles section. An excellent sharpening technique with lots of control over the final output.
Tue, Jan. 16 - Want to see a Finger Lake that has no houses or cottages on its shore? Hemlock Lake's surrounding area is owned by the City of Rochester and remains virtually undeveloped. A natural treasure that maintains the appearance and aura the Finger Lakes once had before residential development.
Fri., Jan. 5 - Another Photoshop Tutorial posted: Using Contrast Boosting has been added to the Articles section. I would also like to welcome our new Photo Contributor Matt Champlin to the team!
Check out the first of his featured photos in the Pratt's Falls profile.
Wed., Jan. 3 - Another Photoshop Tutorial posted: Applying a Soft Focus has been added to the Articles section. Very easy to do.
Decmber 2006
Wed., Dec. 20 - The 3rd in the series of Photoshop Tutorials: Using Adjustment Layers and Masking has been added to the Articles section. This one is a little complicated but an essential step towards mastering Photoshop.
Mon., Dec. 17 - The second in the series of Photoshop Tutorials: Using Contrast Masking has been added to the Articles section. It's a very easy tone-correction technique everyone should learn.
Fri, Dec. 15 - Check out the Honeoye Falls profile page, including a video. Another Photoshop tutorial page should be up this weekend. Keep checking back for updates.
Mon., Dec. 11 - Starting a series of Photoshop Tutorials beginning with Correcting Tone with Levels has been added to the Articles section. For those that are just here for the waterfalls, stay tuned, I'll have another profile up for the weekend. I seemed to have tackled the issue with spam in the Community Forum. Please join us for some discussions.
Thu., Dec. 7 - The second article in the series, Photographing Waterfalls: An Intermediate Guide: Photographic Filters has been added to the Articles section.
Mon., Dec. 4 - NYFalls.com's exclusive free waterfall Screensaver is now available for download. Get it while it's hot!
Friday, Dec. 1 - Tinkers Falls is one of my favorites. With a 50' overhanging plunge that you can climb under and located within a lesser-known state preserve, this peaceful location, yet powerful falls, is a NY state treasure.
November 2006
Tues., Nov. 21 - Cleaned up some broken links and images.
October 2006
Wed., Oct. 25 - I have no internet at my new home yet, so updates will be slim (as they have been over the last few weeks). I'm not a big fan of winter so I'll be spending more and more time this next season on upping new profiles and photos. I have about 6 new profiles in the works and 1 article.
Tues., Oct. 3 - I dug into some old photos for the Pratt's Falls page. I've been there multiple times and it is a very difficult falls to photograph. It's tough to get a shot where the trees aren't in the way and you need to bring an ultra-wide lens to get the whole falls in frame. I'll be returning in the spring for more photos.
September 2006
Mon., Sept. 25 - Videos added to the Ludlowville Falls page.
Wed., Sept. 21 - Area Attractions added to the Bucktail Falls page.
Wed., Sept. 20 - Regular updates resume with the Letchworth State Park pages. Supplemental pages: Waterfall Locations page and a guide to Lodging Options in the park are also up. Because of the massive size of the park, I will treat the pages as a "work in progress" and will be continually updating. This weekend I'm also preparing to implement the print-ordering system so you may order prints of your favorite nyFalls.com photos.
Wed., Sept. 13 - A quick update and call for help. EarthJustice is a wing of the Sierra Club that helps take legal action to prevent people, companies and governments from destroying the environment. They do a lot to protect natural waterways. You don't have to donate any money, but they have a great section of their site with petitions and form letters you can digitally sign and they send them to you local representative. Take Action, the easy way!
Thurs., Sept. 7 - There will be little or no updates this week as I prepare the Letchworth pages. It's a massive park and will takes some time. There are some interesting discussions taking place in the community forum. Take the time to register and join in.
August 2006
Tues., Aug. 29 - Ithaca Falls is one of the state's premiere waterfalls. Despite its popularity, the City of Ithaca has done little to develop it as a park.
Thursday, Aug. 17 - One of my favorites: Ludlowville Falls. I was only able to grab a few photos before time ran out at this site. I hope to get out there again in the fall to get more shots of the cave and creek bed. Also Photographing Waterfalls: A Beginner's Guide has been added to the Articles section. The community forum is working again and I have posted some images from my recent trip to Yosemite. If you have any images to share, please post them to the forum.
Tuesday, Aug. 1 - What does Green Lakes, containing no waterfalls, have to do with waterfalls? Click to find out.
July 2006
Sunday, July 30 - A few more  Taughannock images uploaded.
Thursday, July 28, 2006 - After a week of working on the photos, I finally put up the Taughannock page. I expect it to be a very popular page, so I spent a lot of time on it. I still have 100 or so images to sort through from the upper section of the park. I'll get to those (and captions) later...  I updated the Terminology page and optimized some graphics to make the site load faster.
Tuesday, July 18, 2006 - Work has begun on the Lakes section. I added an entry for Lake Ontario and added a profile for Chimney Bluffs State Park. This is how the lakes section will work: Lake Ontario will have multiple profile pages for the many unique areas. Some lakes will follow that model. Small lakes may have only 1.
Wednesday, July 5, 2006 - Rochester Lower Falls page is up. I also had a chance to upload Google Earth maps  for Norton's Falls and Rochester High Falls.
Saturday, July 1, 2006 - Norton's Falls page is up. Some of my early photos from when I first got my camera (Jan. 2005) are included. These would be the first winter photos. Articles section updated with a article on Safety.

June 2006
Thursday, June 29, 2006 - Small HTML updates across the site.
Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - Rochester High Falls page is up.
Tuesday, June 20, 2006 - Uploaded the Watkins Glen page with 32 images (some of my best). I have to work on captions for this and Stony Brook. I also added 10 or so additional entries to the Terminology page. Added a new image to the slideshow on the left.
Tuesday, June 13, 2006 - Sugar Creek Glen page is up.
Thursday, June 8, 2006 - Rewrote all of the html to make the site more compatible and easier to update. Added the Articles section (now empty) and added a link to the downloads page. Added more maps to the Waterfalls page.
Wednesday, June 7, 2006 - Two updates recently.  Channing H. Philbrick Park, (aka. Linear Park) is up with some nice photos. Also, community member Chris will be posting Trip Reports in the community forum. Major updates to the Waterfalls page including a lot of Google maps that can be used for driving directions.
Wednesday, May 31, 2006 - I took a trip to  Corbett's Glen Nature Park  a few days ago and was impressed. It's a small glen within a well-developed section of town. There has been quite a movement recently to preserve it.  It seems to get a lot of use on hot days.
May 2006
Sunday, May 21, 2006 - The Stony Brook State Park page is up. I only have 8 photos in the gallery; I have about 20 more to put up. I also have a great desktop wallpaper soon to go up.
Looking for team members - I'm looking for volunteers to help maintain the site, take photographs, write content and help build the community. More importantly we need people to get out to some sites and record their experiences.
Contact Matt. for more information

Site mission - This site was made to promote the preservation and continued enjoyment of upstate NY watersheds and the wonderful waterfalls and gorges present in the area. This is a community where photographers, conservationists and anyone who enjoys waterfalls can learn and share information about falls in their area.
