Interesting... I didn't know anything about this one.

It's catagorized by the DEC as a "Unique Area" (like Chittenango.)
http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dlf/ ... erump.html

Archaeological Significance:
Salmon River Falls has a long history of
human activity. The area was a traditional
Indian fishing ground before it was occupied
by European settlers. There are no known
remnants of old structures located on the
property. The only known evidence of the
past which may have historical significance
are initials and dates carved in the shale
riverbed. These etchings are located near the
face of the falls. The oldest visible carvings
have a date of 1892.

Wildlife:
wild turkeys, osprey, bald eagles and deer

Here is a photo.

I'll get this up on the waterfall page and we'll have to head out there this spring

Love the Salmon River Falls

Visited the Salmon River Falls a few years back. It has a nice system of trails for hiking along the gorge, and a step/trail to near the base of the falls.

I like how it's segmented like that.
Is that a summer shot?

Yes, the shot was taken in early July of 2003. There are some interesting flora around the area too, such as this mushroom, which I have never identified.

Let me pass that on to my college buddy, who knows quite a bit about them... see if he knows of it.

We rafted the Salmon River last Saturday, which was great. Way better than Letchworth! Afterwards we checked out Salmon River Falls. It's 110 feet tall and it's in a NYS "unique area". I'm surprised this isn't a state park. Probably a funding issue or something. There were a lot of very old yellow birch trees in the forest surrounding the falls that were almost 2 feet wide. At the top of the falls itself was lots of old graffiti carved right into the rock from as old as 100 years ago. Hearts with initials inside from 1932, 1939, 1944, etc. There was even an entire roster of a boy scout troop from Oswego from 1920!

One of our nyfalls.com "professional" photographers should probably head up there for some better pictures so we can get a page going for this falls. :)

i really would like to go up there, and i might some weekend ahead, but this saturday, because hotels in oswego over harborfest are wicked expensive, i'll be in syracuse sat night to sunday, and then it's just a trek for a whole day considering i'll be waking up 15 minutes before checkout deadline
