It's 100% the net, responsibility of the Seneca Park Zoo. That net was not appropriate for that use, and the bear died because of it.

That may very well be the case, but the net wouldn't have even been necessary if it hadn't come to the point of having to remove the animal. People need to just step away from the phone when it comes to bear sightings, unless there is a threat to the animal or the people. That bear would have likely just gone on its merry way had it not become a media circus.

it was a pretty urban area with children out waiting for the bus in the morning. So the removal was warranted.

The original call to 911 went in at midnight. "Several attempts were made to coax the bear down..." Please! What did they do, open a jar of honey? Of course, if it was still there in the morning something had to be done, but it was never given a chance to just wander off on its own.

I agree the removal was warranted...but it could have been done so that the bear lived. No, I am not an expert, but I seriously believe there were other ways to remove the bear. Closing off the street. Keeping people indoors. Using a net that could handle the bears weight or use a fall bag. Use a boom lift, tranq it and bring it into the basket and down safely. They had plenty of time to plan out something better than what they did.
