I could have spent the entire afternoon following Monarchs around the back field. They were everywhere. I believe that both photos are of males.

The Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester has an enclosed Butterfly garden with local species. This past weekend there were only Monarchs and they seemed pretty eager to get out of there.

Have you ever hiked down through the cemetery on your visits to Watkins Glen? It's one of their "staging" sites for fall migration. I've not seen it yet, but my husband has and it sounds pretty spectacular.

Some local butterflies:
Pearl Crescent (Black Brook Park?)
Humming Bird Clearwing
Sulfur
Both the Sulfur & Clearwing are on Viper's Bugloss an invasive species. There's a few patches of it I've found in this neck of the woods. One pull-off on Rt 8 (near some waterfall hikes, like Shanty) I consistently see interesting wildlife. Though I was not quick enough with the camera on most of those occasions.

As for non-native species...
Rice Paper (One of my favorite photos)
Zebra Longwings:
The butterfly places at Niagra & in Mass. used to be favorite haunts of mine.

Very nice photos. I spotted my first clearwing last month, but it was too quick to get a very good shot.

I have found the online guide that I linked on this thread last month (8/6) to be a very useful tool. You just can't narrow down the species farther than the state level if you're using the distribution maps because, as with most field guides, I have found species here that aren't listed in my county.
