This is not really an uncommon thing for this area ... sadly ... We have a lot of suisides here in that area. I think it is sad that someone would feel that is the only way out.

http://cornellsun.com/section/news/cont ... ed-suicideAt about 2:00 p.m., a body was found at the bottom of Cascadilla Gorge, under the bridge connecting Collegetown to Central Campus. A Cornell Police officer stated that a person allegedly dove head-first into the gorge. Around 2:30, the body was removed on a stretcher from the gorge. In response to the alleged suicide, the Ithaca Police, Cornell Police and Ithaca Fire Department closed the College Avenue Bridge to pedestrians and vehicular traffic. The IPD is currently conducting the investigation, and as of yet, the body has not been identified. Please check back to cornellsun.com for updates.

While the previous one may well have been accidental, it doesn't sound as if this one was.

http://www.theithacajournal.com/article ... /810100301ITHACA — Police have identified the man found in the Cascadilla Gorge Wednesday as Jakub J. Janecka, 33, a Cornell University alumni of Lake Ariel, Pa.
Janecka's body was found in a shallow pool in the gorge directly beneath the College Avenue Bridge at about 2 p.m., witnesses and police said. A witness told police that Janecka jumped, they added.
There were no signs of foul play, and Janecka's death has not been ruled a suicide, said Deputy Ithaca Police Chief John Barber.
“The medical examiner will make that ruling,” Barber said.
Over the past two decades, the suicide rate at Cornell “is consistent with the national average in higher education,” said Simeon Moss, a Cornell spokesman.
Moss said the last time a Cornell student committed suicide at Cornell was in 2006, and since 2002, there have been five student deaths due to suicide.
“The Cornell community is saddened by the news of the apparent suicide of one of its alumni, Jakub J. Janecka, 33, in the Cascadilla Gorge,” said Tommy Bruce, the vice-president for university communications. “We extend our condolences to the young man's family.”
The autopsy is being performed at Lourdes in Binghamton, Barber said. The investigation is ongoing, he added, and authorities are still interviewing witnesses.
“With any death, we conduct a thorough investigation,” Barber said.
Witnesses to the incident should contact the Ithaca Police at 272-3245 or 272-9973.

I was recently poking around on Google Earth and came across an interesting looking falls on Cascadilla Creek here...

Is seems to be well upstream from the main Cascadilla Gorge and possibly publicly accessable. There's a footbridge over the creek and group of tennis courts here.

looks like a beautiful place
To become truly immortal, a work of art must escape all human limits: logic and common sense will only interfere. But once these barriers are broken, it will enter the realms of childhood visions and dreams.
