I thought we had a topic already devoted to this....but can't find it now. Anyway ... I love apple season, because it's the only time I eat them. And they must have been picked really, really recently. I make a pretty mean pie and crisp too.

I like Cortland best - maybe because we had that kind growing in our yard when I was a kid. I don't really see what all the fuss is over Honey Crisp either. But good fresh local apples are one of the many reasons that fall is my favorite season! Once it's over - I just go back to ignoring plastic bags of waxy apples or apples with stickers on them - yuk!

What's your favorite apple?

I'm a sucker for red delicious. Headed to the AppleFarm this weekend hopefully to pick my own and take some photos.

If you voted, please re-vote. Apparently I cleared out the results when I added a new option. :(

Cortland all the way. I need tart and crispness for my apples because that balances out the tons of caramel i dump on them! (and they don't grow granny smiths in NY - too cold i think.)

Normally the spam I get from Orchard Bank goes unopened, but now that it's fall, I'm considering an account for all of my apples.

A new favorite eating apple is the Cameo. It's very firm and keeps well, rather than getting soft and losing its crispness like some other varieties. Of course there are tons of places to buy fresh local apples this time of year, but my favorite is Schutt's. They grow several dozen varieties and each is priced the same per pound - unlike a lot of places that charge based on the variety.

They sell a unique cold treat called an Apple Frost - which looks like an icy soft serve ice cream. It's a frozen mixture of cider and vanilla ice cream. You eat it in a dish with a spoon. Folks rave about them. I had one to see what all the fuss was about. It was good - but I don't crave another.

My favorite is Herman's in Webster, I will be heading there saturday for some of that tangy cider, which is my preferred method of eating an apple.
Did anyone get a copy of Wayne County's apple and cider tour brochure? It does a great job of indexing the farm markets and cider mills in the county.
