because the quality and the selection varies. Some shops specialize in diferrent things. Some keep with the only traditional items, others innovate. It's a nice adventure. Also, west of Rochester many of these shops are still classic "Sweet Shops" -- in that they still serve ice cream sundaes and/or have soda fountains. the last of our Sweet Shops (Rochester) closed many years ago... well... Peter's still does candy. Louie's Sweet Shoppe which used to be in my old neighborhood on Thurston Ave closed in the 80's I think. The Diner in the Strong Museum is loosely based on it.

I like to keep these remnants of the Depression alive by spreading my business around. We have several shops in Rochester, Oliver's in Batavia (which is the least of my favorites), a ton out by buffalo, and a couple in Syracuse.
