Police: man sent car off cliff at park

LETCHWORTH STATE PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) - State Park Police say a man is facing charges after he purposely ran his car into the Genesee River gorge at Letchworth State Park.

Police say at around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, 42-year-old Benjamin Smith hit the gas on his car then walked away. The car went through a fence and dropped approximately 400 feet to the base of the Genesee River gorge. First responders amassed on the area, and discovered that Smith was not in it. He was later located walking in the village of Mt. Morris and taken into custody, where police say he admitted his actions.

Smith has been charged with criminal mischief and criminal nuisance. He was taken to Livingston County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Well, unless another car found it's way into the gorge, I think I saw it yesterday. Looking down from the Highbanks Recreation Area:
