I unexpectedly crossed paths with a flock of hungry cedar waxwings today. And although I had left the house with a healthy load of camera gear, I didn't have my birding lens. It's been ages since I've photographed birds. Too long. Anyway.......wrong lens/right time simply meant I would choose to ignore my regularly scheduled afternoon, generously slather myself in Deep Woods Off, sit on a blanket by this creek and just watch those beautiful birds for nearly three hours. There were probably at least 3 dozen of them diving and swooping for bugs. Very relaxing and peaceful.

I plan to go back tomorrow with the right lens and see if I can get something better than these....

well done. A good place to spot these are at Holley Falls park. They are there every day at the end of the day.

Thanks for the tip. I recall you telling me that - but this place is much closer.....the only problem is that they perch on the far side of the creek and it's a bit far for really good photos, even with a long lens. Perhaps I'll give that place a try. I do love these birds.

I'm considering waders.

If you didn't have your birding lens...what lens did you have? I'd say it did the job quite well!

They look great on mobile. I rented a 70-200 lens and have been trying to get some bluebird pics at the bluebird preserve here in Victor but nada.

Doesn't everything look great on mobile?! ;)

Bluebirds, eh? I've been trying for a few years on and off to get anything decent. The other day while looking for bugs at a local park, one landed within 10 feet of me and I got him! They always look so sad.....poor guys.

I didn't know about the Victor Preserve. Sounds neat! Keep at it. When you say "nada", do you mean you haven't seen any? Or that you haven't been successful in getting a good shot?

Anyway here are just 2 more of the waxwing pics from my second day. It was about 10 hotter this day, and they all had their mouths open, the whole afternoon. I didn't realize it, but apparently they pant like dogs as a way of cooling off. Makes 'em look a little simple, dontcha think!
