It would appear that Old Blenheim Bridge, which at 232 feet was the second-longest single-span covered bridge in the world, has been washed away, a casualty of Irene. Though not able to be used for cars anymore, the bridge was able to be walked on and viewed. It was a magnificent structure. It was in the local paper today that this happened and some others had mentioned it, too. A real shame.

my gosh.

Too bad, I visited it a few years ago and it was a marvel of wooden construction, with large arch shaped beams that held the span across the creek. I guess quite a few covered bridges in Vermont are also gone now.

A shame... makes it clear that photographing and documenting these landmarks is greatly needed... they are not permanent... and years from now, photographs may be all we have left.

This summer I spoke with a Gilboa resident about the loss of the bridge. He mentioned some people had found pieces of the bridge on their property and were demanding money before they would turn them over to the group that wants to preserve what they can from the bridge...
