When did NYFalls.com launch?

Test pages started going up on 6/5/2005. I'm not sure when I started putting up real content. Bucktail Falls and Green Lakes State Park were the first pages.

The difference between the red and blue lines represents how many repeat visits we get.

The orange area represents that people are reading more pages per visit.

Why did you create this site?

I was learning photography and needed a project to push me along. I shot a decent waterfall photo and I decided to put up an online gallery- I realized no-one would want to see that. So I created a resource, then a community.

Is this site free?

Yes, dispite thousands of hours I spend making it look nice, the site will always be free. It's paid for by advertisements. If you also buy a print, you'd be helping out.

How often do you add content?

The message board has new content daily. The main site is updated on a regular basis. This "regular basis" is really dependent on my time and what content I have to work with. Some pages can take weeks to develop. Some will take just a night. At times you will find weekly updates. Most of the time updates will come once every 2 weeks. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to update and optimize existing content.

Are you going to publish a book?

I spend enough time as it is updating this website. I certainly can't draw my attention towards a book. Also I don't want to charge people for this information. I'd much rather people use this website for free than pay me for a book that will be outdated in a few years.

I am open to a photo book of NY waterfalls (maybe in a few years). If anyone with publishing experience would like to work on putting together a book, just let me know.

How do I advertise on your website?

We use Google Adsense to distribute targeted ads. I would prefer to run ads by local businesses.
If you are interested, then read about possibilities here: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dfxqz6zj_5gktp6b
Not all advertisements will cost your business money.

FAQ

I keep getting "Reply Notification" e-mails. Please make it stop.

By default, your account is set up so the board sends you an e-mail when someone replies to a topic you once replied to. You can turn this off completely by changing the setting in your User Control Panel.
Go to:
User Control Panel> Board Preferences> Edit Posting Defaults> and then set Notify me upon replies by default to NO.

You can always opt to turn it on for specific posts by checking the option on individual topics you reply to.

If you just want to turn it off for certain posts, go to your User Control Panel and then in the Overview section click Manage subscriptions and unwatch the topics you no longer want notifications for.

How is this site funded?

NYFalls.com is funded by you... whenever you load a page, and advert may be on that page. Each page is funded by the advertising. That also determines how I grow the site. If more advertising revenue comes from pages covering Lakes, then I plan on creating more lake-themed pages.
The hosting of the website is covered by the advertising.
If you factor in the cost of the technology to build the web pages, take and process all of the colorful photos, mileage to cover all of these locations, and time to research and put it all together, advertising covers a small fraction.
An even smaller fraction comes from Amazon referrals in our bookstore, and smaller than that... sales of prints.
Most of the site is funded by me, out of pocket, and our contributers pay their own expenses.
