The Bluebonnet is the state flower. Here's some history on the yellow rose of TX: http://www.amaranthpublishing.com/yellow.htm It just happens to be her favorite flower.

Ah yes, I knew it was one or the other... :?. I'm ashamed to tell people I once was a cowboy from Texas. But who cares; I'm a Yankee city slicker now

Watch your words. They become your actions.
Watch your actions. They become your habits.
Watch your habits. They become your character.
Watch your character. It becomes your destiny.

Hello everyone.
Thanks for the welcome.
For the_phreac, it sounds like our situations are similar yet totally reversed. I'm the cowgirl from Upstate NY who is now the southern city slicker.
I am really enjoying this site. Thanks for the bluebonnet information Bren. I plan to check into the bald eagles at Bear Creek so I can post it for everyone.
Thanks again and y'all have a great day!

Hi everyone. I figured this should be an appropriate first post. My name is Erik as my user-name will indicate. I'm 25 and working at for a educational publisher in Putnam.

I was pointed towards this website via Matt who found me on Flickr. I am just starting to get into photography seriously, although I have had a passion for it since I was 11. I like to shoot anything that catches my eye, but nature is really my favorite subject matter.

You can look at some of my photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/erikschlange

Hi, my name is Mark Johnson, I live in New Hampshire. I got to know the Finger Lakes area as a student at Cornell in the 1970s. I had opportunities to visit the area on business several times in the 80s and 90s and started vacationing there in 2004. I generally do a one-week trip each summer plus whatever else I can squeeze in. My major trips have been -- Buttermilk Falls State Park, Ithaca, 2004; AuSable Chasm Campground, Adirondacks, 2005; Letchworth State Park, 2006; and to shake things up a bit, Ricker Pond State Park, Groton, Vermont, 2007. I have also done numerous waterfall trips closer to home in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I am planning my major trip in 2008 around Robert Treman State Park in Ithaca. I write about most of my waterfall visits at the Yahoo! Waterfall group. I am more a writer than I am a photographer, so I really appreciate the great photography at nyfalls.com. It is hard to name favorite falls because they are all so good, but a few that come to mind are Taughannock, Sugar Glen, Niagara, Carpenter, Great Gully, and my personal obsession, Rattlesnake Gulf. My favorite towns are Ithaca and Skaneateles. There are also some fabulous falls in northeast Pennsylvania. Besides waterfalls, on my trips I search out great "road food," especially barbecue. I'm also interested in farmers markets and locally produced food that I can enjoy at my campsite or out of a brown bag at a waterfall. I love places like the goat cheese dairy north of Ithaca. I'm glad to discover this forum and look forward to participating.

Welcome, LIsa...

Seeing that you are a landscape photographer from Cortland, I was wondering if you have ever explored and photographed Rattlesnake Gulf in nearby Otisco? Very nice pics of Letchworth, by the way!!

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the compliment. I really need to get some ND filters to help with my exposures, though.

I've never heard of Rattlesnake Gulf?
