I think that's pretty sad that these animals are being euthanized due to a careless owner, hasbe they not thought of using tranquilizers?

I doubt police have access the to the tranquilizing equipment they would need to take down these animals in the short time and quantities they would need to before someone gets killed or the animals disperse to more at risk areas.

Initially no, they did what they had to do. However, the hunt is still on and they are still planning to lethally shoot the remaining two animals at large. I see Jack Hanna says that you cannot tranq an animal at night, b/c the animal will go crazy??? Granted the majority were predators, but shooting camels and giraffes? Come on. Being that Zanesville is about an 1-1/2 hours by car from Columbus, with state air support they could have had tranqs for most of the animals within 45 mins.

The problem is that tranquilizers don't work immediately. At night it would be nearly impossible to track an animal until it finally went down, if it went down with one "dose." Also, having an animal that is inherently dangerous freaking out from the impact of the dart can pose a significant threat. I don't know all of the species that were housed at the facility, but I would also question the need to kill animals that wouldn't typically be considered dangerous.

I think in a press conference the sheriff said the right thing: "We don't go to police academy to learn how to stop lions and tigers."

...and it IS Ohio after all. But seriously, the one who is truly at fault for the whole mess took the easy way out. I don't give a rat's ass if he wanted to commit suicide, but why did he have to make the animals suffer? :beatbat:
