I think that's pretty sad that these animals are being euthanized due to a careless owner, hasbe they not thought of using tranquilizers?

I doubt police have access the to the tranquilizing equipment they would need to take down these animals in the short time and quantities they would need to before someone gets killed or the animals disperse to more at risk areas.

Initially no, they did what they had to do. However, the hunt is still on and they are still planning to lethally shoot the remaining two animals at large. I see Jack Hanna says that you cannot tranq an animal at night, b/c the animal will go crazy??? Granted the majority were predators, but shooting camels and giraffes? Come on. Being that Zanesville is about an 1-1/2 hours by car from Columbus, with state air support they could have had tranqs for most of the animals within 45 mins.

The problem is that tranquilizers don't work immediately. At night it would be nearly impossible to track an animal until it finally went down, if it went down with one "dose." Also, having an animal that is inherently dangerous freaking out from the impact of the dart can pose a significant threat. I don't know all of the species that were housed at the facility, but I would also question the need to kill animals that wouldn't typically be considered dangerous.

I think in a press conference the sheriff said the right thing: "We don't go to police academy to learn how to stop lions and tigers."

...and it IS Ohio after all. But seriously, the one who is truly at fault for the whole mess took the easy way out. I don't give a rat's ass if he wanted to commit suicide, but why did he have to make the animals suffer? :beatbat:

He was a nut, and he was probably thinking more about making his town suffer than the welfare of the animals.

Man Eats Cocaine From Brother's Butt, Dies

A South Carolina man's brother died after police said he was forced to eat cocaine hidden in his brother's backside.
Both brothers were taken into custody on allegations they had drugs in their car.
But police told Charleston, S.C., TV station WCIV there were additional drugs hidden in 23-year-old Deangelo Mitchell's backside.

Sheriff: Ohio Man Cleaning Gun Killed Amish Girl

What's odd about this is that it is estimated she was 1.5 miles away!

A man cleaning his muzzle-loading rifle shot the gun into the air, accidentally killing a 15-year-old Amish girl driving a horse-drawn buggy more than a mile away, a sheriff said Tuesday.

What goes up must come down. Amazes me that people don't comprehend that bullets shot into the air don't enter orbit or space, and that they always come back down, at terminal velocity, and occasionally kill people.

Police stop Greece man allegedly taking injured deer to Unity Hospital

A Greece man was charged with driving while intoxicated after police found him allegedly trying to drive an injured deer to the hospital on Sunday night.

Andrew Caswell, 29, of Jamestown Terrace, had apparently struck the deer on Hincher Road and was driving it to Unity Hospital for treatment, said Greece Police Capt. Steve Chatterton.

Chatterton said residents of Hincher Road had called police late Sunday to report that a deer had been struck by a car, and that there was what appeared to be an argument among a small group of men near where the deer had been hit.

At the scene, residents gave a description of the car and told officers they’d heard the men say they were going to bring the deer to the hospital.

When police stopped Caswell’s car, he admitted to officers that he was taking the deer to the hospital, said Chatterton.

Caswell was ticketed and released on his own recognizance.

The deer died en route to the hospital. It was turned over to the highway department for disposal.

In a written statement, Police Chief Todd Baxter said while he sympathizes with trying to save a deer during the holiday season, “driving while intoxicated will not be tolerated.”
