Let's bring this topic back to life. Personally I haven't been out during the Winter shooting because I've only been shooting digital since around mid March. I do however want to go out this Winter and get some shots. My concerns are...how cold is too cold for a digital camera? And how long is too long to have your camera exposed to the cold?
I'm looking forward to some hiking in Durand when the snow comes and I'm hoping we could have some type of outside group outing also this season.

I haven't had any issues taking my old Olympus point and shoot out in the cold. I haven't taken any temperature readings, but cold would vary from nippy to "frozen snot" variety of cold. I have yet to take my SLR, since those tend to be less "sealed from the elements."
First thing to do is check your user manual for safe operating temperatures. That would be your guideline for when you can take your camera out.
Next-- buy some zip-lock backs that your camera can easily fit into. By sealing your camera/lenses in a zip-lock back when transitioning from hot/cold or cold/hot you help keep condensation to a minimum. It also helps to leave your camera in the zip-lock and camera bag for a while when moving from hot/cold or cold/hot to let it cool down or warm up slowly.
I also use those little Silica Gel bags to absorb moisture. I keep several of them in my camera bags. You can find those in shoe boxes.

I've taken my D40x on day long hikes in the rain, snow and cold with little to no problem. I've gotten my best shots in the single digit to below zero temp range, clear blue skies with no haze and a view that never ends. The only problem I’ve had is the front of the lens will cloud up if I have a filter or cap on. I do not keep it in my pack or plastic bags. I keep the camera exposed to the elements for the entire trip. Care is taken to change the lens in the rain but other than that no special care required. Never had battery issues with the cold but do carry a spare battery. I use a harness that was made for binoculars that holds the camera tight to my chest it also helps steady the camera. When I return to my vehicle or building I leave the camera in the back of the car or a cooler room away from direct heat, and let it dry out.

I tend to go out if there is no ice. I love to go out in the middle of a snow storm the most.

some great tips...thanks. I can't wait to get some winter shots. Mt Hope is on my list along with Durand and I would also like to do a Letchworth trip. I remember going to Letchworth many years ago during the winter and the ice formations near the falls were incredible. Anyone else interested in a winter Letchworth trip?
