Saw these bones on the trail on my way to Excelsior Glen. I'm guessing red fox - maybe someone can confirm?

That's a good guess. The skull definitely looks like the shape of a fox's head.

lower jaw bone maybe the length of my middle finger, the skull could basically fit into my hand, with maybe a bit hanging over

Given the size of the eye sockets (yeah, not the correct term) in relation to the overall skull, I would say fox too. I was debating red vs. gray, but I'm not that good.
