Am I seeing correctly that the flowers have 4 petals? Is it in bloom right now?

yes the flower has four petals, and it's in bloom now, I can get a better overall picture if you need it. I have a wild grape vine trying to take it over.

Dang, the only thing that I keep coming up with is Flowering Dogwood, but the petals/bracts don't look right. Does it have fruit (if so, what color when ripe) or does it change color in the fall?

hi brenda,
no it dosen't have fruit and I don't remember the color of the leaves in the fall. I think it has "sharon" in its name?
It's a slow grower I've been here over 20 years and the bush has only grown about 3 feet taller total height around 7 feet width about 4 to 5 feet.

Hmm, it's not Rose of Sharon unless we're going to have a very early fall. The old wives tale is that frost is six weeks away when the Rose of Sharon blooms. I'm at a loss, but I'll keep digging. I'll see if Kelly has any thoughts. She knows more about ornamental horticulture.

I'm on the case.....Backpacker, do the flowers have a strong scent which you could say resemble orange? I'm thinking it is a mock orange (Philadelphus).
