FREE SPORT FISHING CLINIC DESIGNATED FOR SAUQUOIT CREEK

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
(DEC) Regional Director Judy Drabicki today announced the designation of
a Free Sport Fishing Clinic for Sauquoit Creek in the Mohawk Valley on
Saturday, June 7. As a way to encourage recreational fishing in the
state, DEC designates a number of free sport fishing clinics each year
in local communities where children and adults who don’t currently
possess a fishing license can experience the sport of fishing for a
day.

“New York State offers some of the best fishing opportunities
in the country and free fishing clinics are a wonderful way for people
to learn about this popular sport and enjoy a day in the great
outdoors,” Drabicki said.

A valid New York State fishing license is required for everyone
16 years old and older to fish in New York State waters, except during
these designated free clinics, or on the statewide designated free
fishing weekend June 28 and 29, 2008.

The Sauquoit Creek and its tributaries have been designated as a
free sport fishing clinic for Saturday, June 7, 2008. The fishing
clinic takes place at the Washington Mills Athletic Park, at the
intersection of Oneida Street and Roberts Road, in the Town of New
Hartford, Oneida County. It will run from 10am-2pm, rain or shine.
Volunteers from many sponsoring groups will be helping participants
fish, as well as running casting for accuracy and distance contests,
teaching knot tying, how to bait the hook, the living stream display
will be set up, perhaps a stream survey demonstration will be run and
there will be fishing poles and bait for all attendees to use.

The site features one of the area's newest accessible fishing
decks. The event is made possible through help from Mohawk Valley Trout
Unlimited Chapter, Fly Fishers Anglers Association, Sauquoit Fish and
Game Club, Wyandotts Fish and Game Club, NYS Outdoorsman’s Hall of
Fame, Town of New Hartford, Wal-Mart and Morgan’s Bait.

Anyone with questions about this event or other fishing clinics
which may have been designated, please call either the Region 6
fisheries office in Watertown at 315-785-2262 or Bill Girvan at
315-736-5738. More information about fishing clinics and fishing in New
York State is available on DEC’s web site at http://www.dec.ny.gov .
