great park

Postby champy1013 » Wed Mar 07, 2007 11:46 am

Great place for camping - often times in the high season you must reserve months in advance. The cabin camping (from reserve america) is really nice. It's also a great place to go mountain biking and of course, hiking....

Really one of my favorite parks. I love going there around mid-May, right before the big crowds and when the leaves start coming out. The place is dripping with Native American history as well -(the White Woman of the Genesee) and interesting facts about the Mount Morris dam down there that prevents Rochester from flooding like it used to.

apparently there are hundreds of cascades, big and small just waiting to be mapped.. Hopefully within a few years and through the combined efforts of this community, we'll have photos, names and locations of each.

Past the upper falls, there's a gorgeous one, you have to walk up the gorge to get to it....I'm not sure what the official policy of the state park system is concerning walking the gorge in Letchworth - but we might want to research that before we map and lead anyone to places...I'm not even sure if the place I was, was technically a place I was suppose to be :)

Don't worry. You were definitely in a place you were allowed to be. There's a lot of intermittent falls spilling into the gorge at Letchworth. The one upstream from Upper Falls you saw was probably Timber Tunnel Cascade. There's a little bit of a trail system on the east side of the park. Hardly anyone knows about it because its undeveloped. You can get interesting views of the 3 main falls from this side. Drive over the bridge over the river in Portageville and the trailhead is immediately on the left. Another notable falls is Deh-ga-ya-soh Falls. The Freeman's book devotes about 20 pages to all the Letchworth falls. Also Scott Ensminger (Falzguy) wrote a book about Letchworth falls which in now out of print, but I bought a pdf copy of it from him last year. Here are photos of Timber Tunnel and Deh-ga-ya-soh.

Nice, those are tough ones to shoot. It's difficult to get a clear view.

The sunlight glare was horrible both those days. Timber Tunnel is especially difficult because most of the falls flows under tree limbs (a timber tunnel) and the only place for you to shoot from is from the other side of the river.

I have not heard of it referred to as timber tunnel. Is it another name for one on this list?

Those look like Deh-ga-ya-soh Falls
as seen from the Greenway.

Timber Tunnel Cascade

Postby cbobcat49 » Sat Mar 10, 2007 5:43 pm

No, it doesn't look like you have it listed. It flows directly into the river on the west side, about 1/2 mile upstream from the upper falls and train bridge. It may have another name I'm not sure. That's what Scott Ensminger calls it in his book. For all we know maybe he named it. :)

I should probably get it up then.
Is this it?

Is it best viewed from the FLT across the gorge?

Yes, it looks like you pinpointed it exactly on the map. And yes, it's fairly easy to see if you're hiking along the FLT on the other side. It's a bit of a scramble to get down to river level for the best view though.

Letchworth Waterfall Names

Postby Falzguy » Sat Apr 28, 2007 12:54 pm

The names used in my Letchworth Waterfall book are derived from research by me and the park naturalist Douglas K. Bassett.

Most of the falls in the park had no official name when I did research for the book. I assume once the book was published the names became official.

Crapsy Clay Falls Animation

Postby Falzguy » Wed May 02, 2007 10:17 am

Crapsy Clay Falls is located in the northern end of Letchworth State Park. To see an animation of the falls on a very windy day go to:

Hence why you should never pee into the wind.

Check out the FLT on the east side of the river upstream from upper falls. That's a nice walk this time of year. You'll probably be able to take a better pic of Timber Tunnel cascade than me. :)
